16 ways technology has ruined my life
פֿון פֿאָרווערטס, נאָוועמבער 19, 1936
for the non yiddish readers essentially an issue of Forwards in 1936 discussed trans men and then pictured above someone wrote in to say that gender transgression was nothing new because his shtetl in ukraine had a community member and merchant who transitioned from female to male and was very much accepted and married his girlfriend. though I know this is being recounted by a cis man so I do wonder how Berel himself felt and experienced shtetl life as a trans person, and I feel sad not know of any of his own words put to the record in history. but I hope he felt at home and surrounded with love. the last line is “In our shtetl, Berel-Beyle always had a good name as a fine, upstanding Jew.”
